PRK - Surface Ablation (PRK-LASEK)

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) is also a method used to reshape the cornea using the Excimer Laser.

After the eye is prepared by instilling anesthetizing eye drops a protective drape and eyelid retainer are applied to prevent the eyelid from blinking during the procedure. The Excimer Laser then removes the outer protective covering of the cornea. The laser is then used to remove a specific pre-programmed amount of corneal tissue to correct the patient’s refractive error. Cool sterile saline is then used to irrigate the cornea and antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drops are applied to the cornea. A bandage contact is placed over the treated area, where it remains for several days.

PRK can be used to treat a wide range of refractive errors including, myopia (nearsightedness), astigmatism, and hyperopia (farsightedness).

1. The Excimer laser is used to remove the epithelium (the outer protective surface of the cornea).

2. The Excimer laser is used to ablate a specific pre-programmed amount of the cornea.

3. The epithelium grows back over the treated area in 3-5 days.

4. The cornea is now flatter or steeper depending on the type of procedure.  The light rays entering the cornea are now focused directly on the retina.
